Configuring BSNL Broadband for MTU

December 5, 2012

As many others have reported this problem, few sites were working, but others like were not working.

A common suggestion was the to figure out the MTU using ‘ping -M do -s 1472’. This by going on reducing the MTU value till its Okay (i.e. do not get the fragment msg when run ping).

Got that value to be 1460 on some sites like Yahoo. So decided to set that. But on repeated trials it was not happening.

Finally it clicked, that I am using a D-Link router infront of the BSNL router (model UTSTARCOM WA302) and I need to be doing that there.

So changed the MTU value on the D-Link router to 1460, and now all the websites are opening fine. Just to be on the safe side, have set BSNL broadband router to 1492 (the supposed max for PPPoe mode).
