Highway movie review

February 23, 2014

Imtiaz Ali is a curious case. His movies may not seem real, but he doesn’t try to be as well. I saw his ‘Jab we met’ and liked it. Did not like his ‘Love Aaj kal’ but even that one had decent music. ‘Rockstar’ was okay, again good music. This ‘Highway’, which released this friday was his fourth film I watched. And I enjoyed this the most.

Its not a great movie, nor story a very realistically plausible one. Its a feel good film. Even mills-and-boonish in some ways, where the Kidnapper playing the conventional TDH (Tall dark and handsome) character of these stories.

Also its extremist in its treatment of characters. The rich are all fake and dark. And the poor mostly authentic. I think real world characters are more grey.

But this story, hinges on finding virtue in the damned. Otherwise criminals are shown to be virtuous in only this aspect, which makes this movie story a make believe one.

But I won’t call it a fake one. As it appeals to something good in us, when watching. And I’ll take this kind of goody-goody fakeness than the fakeness in a typical Karan Johar film (think Kuch Kuch Hota hai, even Jab Tak hai Jaan, which was not by Kjo but you get the point).

So this is quite authentic fake. For lack of better words. Even a beautiful fake, if you will.

Beautifully shot, which some spell binding scenes, in Himachal and Kashmir and lots of other ones in this road film. And beautifully acted by Aliya Bhatt and Randeep Hooda.

And last but not the least. This song is so so good. Nooran sisters Yay! A R Rahman Yay!

Naam rab naam sai ka Ali Ali Ali…
